Mushroom compost and underutilised feedstocks

In order to retrofit a typical mushroom farm into a sustainable biorefinery, BIOrescue project partners will develop an innovative biorefinery concept to avoid the disposal of mushroom compost. In this concept, mushroom compost will be supplemented by wheat straw, as this feedstock is already stored at mushroom farms for compost production.

Additionally, the availability of other local underutilised lignocellulosic feedstocks such as barley and oat straw, beet residues, apple pomace, vineyard and olive mill wastes as well as citrus peels will be assessed in four European mushroom producing areas in order to determine the main available feedstock in terms of composition and proximity to each of these regions and potentially reduce the need for storing wheat straw.
